Thanks for this thoughtful post. I agree with many of the points you make. It's a difficult thing to balance growth and the community becoming diluted, and I agree that there needs to be more moderation in online communities due to the semi-anonymous nature of the Internet itself.

Great post.

I currently enjoy HN as well, but I don't hold out any hope that it will not turn into yet another digg/reddit. As you pointed out, dumb visitors pay the bills, and I don't blame anyone for following the money. There will always be somewhere better to hang pop up. :)

@yegg
watrcoolr is (besides the name) great, thanks

And for something completely on a tangent. In the Pork and Beans video that you link to on YouTube arround minute 1:17 starting with words "everyone likes to dance to a happy ...". Is this not the Numa Numa Guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Brolsma)? So now 4 years later he is doing cameo appearances. You gotta love the net!

Slashdot is better _because_ of moderation. Also its decline (while clearly visible) is much much slower then the other two. Part of it is probably because "the management" continuously looked for ways to mentain quality, and every couple of years implemented either tweaks or (earlier) redesigns of the moderation system.

One big advantage is that its moderation and meta-moderation system allows for a periodical "reset". Simply giving by hand only 10-20 people moderation points, in time the moderator population will grow to the same size, but strongly leaning towards the intitial's views of quality. To my knoledge this has not been done, but it's possibility demonstrates the system's merits.

@Mahesh, @Antonio, I've been experimenting with creating a dzone competitor for a while now. Unfortunately, it's kinda ended up on the back burner for me. I think the problem with dzone is its horrible UI. Its interface doesn't facilitate discussion, as too much space is taken up by ads, gaudy oversized buttons, and sidebar information that isn't terribly valuable.

Do you think there's space for another, slimmed-down dzone?

I've often wondered about capping the size of communities, and only allowing new members when an open spot becomes available. I don't know if this would mitigate the "popularity = low quality" effect, but it seems like it should help.

But is there a algorithmic way to moderate a community?

http://numbrosia.com/ uses IQ tests. That was not very successful (fun, though).

The problem with the democratic voting system is that people who have more time to vote are not necessarily the most ideal community members, i.e. trolls. But weighting votes seems unfair.

Perhaps it could involve who each user personally finds valuable interesting, harnessing the social graph.

You should also look in to slashdot its far far better than crapy digg.

news.yc+/.+techmeme|prog.reddit.com = tech+entrep+startup+web

on web most of the blogs are redundant. so u better use techmeme.

also have a look @ dzone.com its better for developer.

if you know any other best tech+entrep+startup plz let me know :)
