> Can I run a webserver on my ipad.

My notepad as a integrated webserver, if folks would like the ability to server their own html/css/js I could add support for that quickly, but the rules against running ruby/php/python (scripts) really hamper it's usefulness

@socrateos
I don't se reasons to use an iPad for such things... unless you are MacGyver! :P

I really don't think it's meant for doing serious work on its own, unless you're in the word/excel desk-job sector...primarily, it's a shiny, fancy media portal. Everything you ask for is certainly possible, but as others have been saying it is not a laptop replacement (and lord knows why you'd want to run a server on one).

Don't let your eyes drift from your heart's work, socrateos!

At the moment, the answer is probably no to all of the above. But that's the point. The iPad is not meant to be a workstation for programmers.

Can I run ruby scripts on iPad?
Can I run MySQL or PostgreSQL database on iPad?
Can I run c/c++ compiler on iPad?
Can I run a webserver on iPad?
Can I run CISCO VPN client?
In other words, can I do my work on iPad?
If not now, can these be ported to the iPad platform? If so, how soon?

The reviews of the iPad I have been most impressed by emphasise the quality of the user experience - it is direct manipulation taken to a new level, in a device that (according to the reviewers) feels close to perfect.

Many years ago I heard Alan Kay speak, and something that stuck in my mind was a graph he showed of task difficulty vs. user skill. A line on this graph drew the division between tasks that a user would find easy and those that the user would find challenging. He said that the concerns for user interface design were quite different on the two sides of the line: on the easy side, aesthetics were important, to give the user pleasure in carrying out a trivial task. On the challenging side, user interface features that provide a safety net were important - e.g. undo, which allows a user to explore without being committed to continuing along a particular path.

The iPad is aimed mostly at supporting non-challenging tasks, and Apple is right to compete on the basis of quality of user experience.

People say you have to use the iPad to appreciate it. I found that was true of the iPod Touch, and I look forward to when I can try an iPad in an Apple store. I'm in the UK, so that will still be a few weeks away.

Great write-up. It's nice to read a slightly more level presentation of the iPad.

Of course, I am one who would like to purchase an iPad once the 3G option is available. And my intentions for purchase is to get an iPod Touch that I can actually see when I play around with it... (smile)

I am also hoping it will have some decent PDF support so I can replace my Kindle.

Thanks again for a nicely balanced look at the iPad. And you are so right about the name being terrible.
