I agree with your review 100%, and I would prefer to watch a show like you described, but sadly, they will just cater to the Jersey Shore crowd…with just the sprinkling of nerd on top.

I can’t imagine any person, even startup founders, that would have any interest in sitting and watching a real person program for 12 hours a day 7 days a week. And nothing else. It’s not entertaining TV, not even worth watching for a programmer.

Apologies to everyone that actually cares about this stuff, but 99% of people, believe it or not, don’t care at all what churn rate and SaaS mean. They would change the channel and still not care if you tried to tell them.

In no world ever will a show like you’re suggesting ever exist.

I agree with your review almost completely, except for the idea that Hollywood, ever honestly seeking to enlighten and edify, has somehow tragically misunderstood the geek scene. They understand it completely; it’s just not sexy. Hollywood finds anything that is even remotely considered cool in any circle whatsoever, applies the sexy formula to it, and tosses is out to the slavering hordes of brain donors to see if it sells. If your average actual geek thought it was interesting, that would be a sign of utter failure in Hollywood terms.

It sounds like you’d prefer a more sober, intricate depiction of a startup operation. Totally fair. So to me, complaining about “Startups: SV” not being authentic is like calling out a “Real World” cast for not living in the real world. These types of shows aren’t meant to be any more based in reality than Anne Coulter is meant to be taken seriously as a political mind. It’s entertainment.

Well said, there’s PLENTY of real drama when running a startup, none of it depicted in the show… hopefully Silicon Valley won’t get crowded with kids thinking this is Disneyland.
